One of the most frequent concerns people have before starting any pain treatment is the work calendar question: what do I have to cancel? How long will I be out? Can I still function?
For shockwave therapy, the answer is one of its most attractive selling points: for the vast majority of patients and occupations, you can return to work the same day.
But let’s get specific — because “work” means very different things to different people in the North Miami area, from professionals sitting at desks in Aventura to tradespeople and healthcare workers who are on their feet all day.
The Typical Post-Treatment Window
A shockwave therapy session at Peak Performance lasts 15–20 minutes. After treatment, you may experience mild soreness in the treated area — similar to how a muscle feels after a deep tissue massage or an intense workout. You will not be sedated. You will not have an incision. You will not need assistance getting to your car.
Most patients drive themselves to and from their appointments. Most schedule sessions during lunch breaks or before/after work without disruption to their schedule. There is no anesthesia recovery period, no surgical wound to protect, and no limitations on driving.
Desk and Office Workers
If your work involves sitting at a computer, taking calls, attending meetings, or any sedentary professional activity, there is essentially no recovery period. You can return to your desk job immediately after a session, even if the treated area is mildly sore. Plantar fasciitis patients may find it comfortable to keep a shoe on rather than go barefoot, but no other accommodation is typically needed.
Standing and Walking Jobs
For nurses, teachers, retail workers, hospitality staff, and others who are on their feet all day — particularly if shockwave is being used to treat plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, or knee pain — the 24–48 hours after treatment require a bit more awareness.
Moderate standing and walking is generally fine from the day of treatment. What we ask patients to reduce is high-impact activity — prolonged standing on hard floors without supportive footwear, heavy lifting that loads the treated area, or running/jumping during the immediate post-treatment period. Most nursing, teaching, or retail work falls within acceptable limits.

Physical Labor, Construction, and Trades
For patients in physically demanding occupations, we typically recommend a half-day of reduced physical load after each session if possible — not as a hard requirement, but as a way to protect the inflammatory healing response that the treatment triggers. If you’re a roofer in Opa-locka who physically cannot take a half-day, let us know — we’ll provide guidance on how to modify your approach to minimize re-irritation during the healing window.
The good news: the soreness that follows shockwave is typically milder than what these patients already experience from their chronic injury. Most find the post-treatment discomfort manageable within the context of their normal workday.
Athletes and Coaches
We have active patients — gym owners, coaches, competitive athletes — who treat shockwave sessions the way they treat hard training days: they schedule the next 24–48 hours as a “light day.” After that, they return to full activity with progressive loading. This approach consistently produces the best combination of treatment compliance and clinical outcome.
The One True Restriction: NSAIDs for 48 Hours
Here’s what we actually ask every patient to do after treatment: avoid ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin (for pain relief), and prescription anti-inflammatories for 48 hours. This is the most important post-treatment guideline, and it has nothing to do with protecting an incision or surgical site — it’s about preserving the inflammatory healing response that shockwave therapy is designed to trigger.
If you need pain relief, acetaminophen (Tylenol) is fine. Ice is also something to avoid during this window for the same reason. But you can eat normally, drink normally, go to work, socialize, and live your life. Shockwave therapy fits into real people’s real schedules — which is part of why patients in North Miami who have been avoiding treatment because of “I can’t take time off” finally find a path forward with us.
